This might be a 'just walk away' moment for me, when I'm generally a live and let live, dowhatyawanna sort of guy, but I don't really understand why folk would want to take a modern and take it backwards to an earlier design. Ride a vintage with a 2T setup, keep it old school, love the look and accept the older mechanicals as they were I get, take a vintage, keep the beautiful lines and 'upgrade' it to more reliable engine with more pull I can also understand, take a modern and customise it to something new and different again, sure, but to buy a modern as it is, with all its new lines and mechanicals, and then try to do some sort of retrofication so it looks like something it isn't, that I struggle with. Piaggio have always seemed to get progression about right with design cues from the past with the best of modern mechanicals. In the UK, when manufacturers have tried to cash in on deliberately throwback looks with modern engines, such as the Neco or the Lambretta LN, sales have generally bombed. Maybe its just me...

Written by multiple authors and translated from Italian, the book not only details the history of the Vespa, but puts it in historical context. That historical context can be burdensome for a reader that is not from Italy or even Europe, but it does set the stage for the various developments and models over the years. But the graphics and overall design are excellent, and I would give this impressive tome 4 1/2 stars if I could. How interesting that one of the greatest examples of Industrial Design was created by an engineer, not one of the great Italian designers.
