Piaggio's Vespa scooter has been a design icon since its release in 1946, becoming a style accessory in its own right with adoring fans all over the world. Several generations later, the Vespa is still in production with a range of models, but India-based design firm Mightyseed has come up with an electric revamp of the classic scooter that brings it firmly into the modern. The smooth, minimalist look of Mightyseed's Vespa 98 concept is immediately identifiable as a Vespa, with wheel fairings and a fender-mounted headlight. LED strip lights on the handlebars and a LIDAR system instead of rearview mirrors to alert the rider are welcome additions, while power comes from a 30 aH lithium-ion battery and hub-mounted motor allowing for storage under the seat.

Vespa 98/1The Vespa 98 was the first serially built Vespa from Piaggio. It was built between 1946 and 1947 and was divided into four series: V.98/1 and V.98/2 and from 1947 on V.98/3 and V.98/4, with minor modifications. The basis for the first model were the prototypes Paperino (or MP5) and MP6 by Corradino D'Ascanio and Enrico Piaggio. The V98 has a 98 cc engine, a three-speed gearbox and a top speed of 60 km/h. Here in Israel, the cheapest/lowest octane gas you can find is 95... so I have been using that. But I'm starting to wonder if there is any potential advantage (except to the wallet of the gas station owners) in performance or engine health of using the 96 or 98 octane gas that is also readily available here. I should add that my scoot rides like a dream and never knocks/pings. I think if Piaggio had figured out a way to add opposable thumbs to this piece of mechanical art, it would draw me a perfect espresso shot at the end of every ride.
